PRINTING A CHILDREN’S BOOK IN AUSTRALIA –
We asked Zelle Pullich, the author of Crocodylus Scorpius about the challenges and lessons learnt when printing and producing a children’s book locally on the Gold Coast.
FPP: What inspired you to write and self-publish a children’s book?
Zelle: My children, their interests and seeing, first-hand, how essential creativity, imagination and playfulness is for their development.
FPP: How did you decide to print your book with Fast Proof Press, and what factors did you consider in making that decision?
Zelle: I wanted to use a local company, someone reputable and with a care factor. Supporting local Gold Coast businesses is a bonus and to know that they provide an excellent and competitive service is very exciting. Why look any further?
FPP: What was the biggest challenge you faced in the development, printing and self-publishing process?
Zelle: It’s important to accept that the whole process takes time. There are many stages that are out of the author’s control and it helps to be flexible and patient.
FPP: Can you tell us a bit about your background as an author and adventurer, and how that influenced your work on this book?
Zelle: Way back in the day, I studied Creative Arts, including Creative Writing and Drama. My hobby was puppeteering. I enjoyed entertaining children with my puppets and seeing their delighted faces.
FPP: What message or themes do you hope readers take away from your book, and how did you work to convey those ideas?
Zelle: My husband and I enjoyed going on holidays to North Queensland. It was wonderful to be able to admire the wonders of this part of the world with our children and teach them about the importance of conservation. The illustrator has done a wonderful job of showcasing the fascinating water world and it’s diversity.
FPP: What advice would you give to others who are considering self-publishing their own books, particularly in the children’s book market?
Zelle: Stick to your idea and what you envisage the book to look like. Be persistent.
FPP: What are your future plans for your writing and publishing career, and how do you see your work evolving over time?
Zelle: I am already working on my next story. It’s also set in the Daintree and the main character is a female frog.
